So, a funny thing happened to me recently. I was watching the recent Polyphonic video about the death of genre, and suddenly, Noah called me out. By name! He challenged me to explain the academic perspective on genre, and I can't just say no to that sort of thing, so here I am stepping up and doing it. Musical genre's a really complicated thing, but it's also really important to how we understand and relate to the music we love, so let's dig in and try to figure it all out!

She wrote a memoir, and the cover is a pic of her as a young, bratty-looking teenager. So deceptive because my gut reaction was "what does this kid have to teach me?", but after reading it learned that, like this song, there is a lot of substance to her.

That is the best use you give to music score paper? Well, at least I a, happy young people follow Rick's show. I am 62 and I agree a lot with him. Nevertheless, I learn to appreciate today's pop since I understand not all is the stiles I like, but I have to recognize genius and creativity of most of modern artists, because they really pull a lot of audience, I recognize. Rick, please don't stop. You have a lot of attention of youngsters too.

I have absolutely no clue about music theory, and it's a subject that doesn't *interest* me enough for even a cursory overview. But because you explain the results of the the theory (how each choice changes the "feel"), I get a better understanding of some of my favourite songs and (even though I'm already in awe of those people who have spent the time to master their art) I find myself even more impressed at the thought behind the pretty tunes. Thank you. ❤️ (Oh, and for the kick drum, I always thought it was representing a heartbeat rather than time. As you said, something so simple providing so much scope... 😉)

I just re-watched the piece, and not to be intentionally contrarian, but Prince's solo was abysmally horrific. Instead of paying homage or even respect to Harrison's masterpiece, Prince thought the song was about him personally and played terribly showy and non-musical garbage that showed him, once more, to be an egotistic wanker. It was amateurish rubbish playing, too, in my opinion, that didn't fit with the piece at all. I recall this being my exact reaction when it originally occurred as well. This is the part where everyone tells me how wrong I am, and I tell you to re-watch the performance and evaluate what you see/hear and NOT how much you love the original piece (I do, too).

Ian Dury is well worth your time when it comes to writing excellent lyrics. This song, Glimpses, is a punchline tune. You have to listen to the last line to get the gist of the whole song. Beatles - Drive My Car; The Police - Message In A Bottle; The Rays - Silhouettes; The Ames Brother - Naughty Lady of Shady Lane; are all examples of punchline tunes. ruclips.net/video/gQ0cK_eeZ9A/видео.html

First instinct following Fabri is that an iconoclast can create a genre by not fitting one, and then it becomes a matter of whether other artists fit the definition of the new form. But I hate genre in general because the best artists will flow between them without regard to any potential labeling. Prince, Miles, Regina Spektor, Bjork are among my favorite artists that have no regard for precedent and instead roll with their soul. So I guess it follows that to me Soul music is the only “genre” worth listening to, but it is completely unbounded. Anything that doesn’t come from the Soul is cynical and unworthy. (But don’t worry, I’m very forgiving in my reading of such)

"There's not much voice leading and the chord functions don't make a lot of sense." Yes, there's not much voice leading, but the chord functions are COMPLETELY standard. This is the back half of a circle of fifths progression, IV - viio - iii - vi - ii - V - I, except the viio has been turned into a V, which is basically the same chord, just with a different sound, and the vi has been turned into a IV, which is extremely common as well. IV - V - iii - vi is also the Traditional 80's Intro -- see Never Gonna Give You Up for the most obvious example. Changing the vi into a IV doesn't change this very much. It's also not hiding the key. The F, G, and Em triads together make up the entire C major scale and, in that order, are very characteristic of major-mode music, and that particular combination of functions doesn't make sense in A minor (the Em would have been an E7 in this progression, but even then I think it would sound like a V7/vi in C more than a V7 in Am). This is standard run-of-the-mill C major with no tricks.

Prince was good but this is just really good pentatonic blues riffs like a million before him. like I said, hes good but the best solo ever? not even close! you would have to discount Hendrix, Gilmore, Page, SRV, Eric Johnson, Beck, Easton, Knoffler, Trower and on and on... not buying the hype.

whenever I hear that very sparce base drum pattern the rhythm sort of (while listening to the song) in my ears slowly morph into the feeling of a slow resting heart beat. Something about that captures to me that same described feeling of being there.
